A small village in Limón Province, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. It is only accessible by boat or by plane. You cannot drive to Tortuguero. Most people drive to La Pavona and take a water taxi from there to Tortuguero.
Tortuguero National Park, whose beaches are a major nesting site for sea turtles and home to a large variety of birds. The Sea Turtle Conservancy runs a research station where you can volunteer during the nesting season.
The park’s freshwater canals, wetlands and forests shelter wildlife like jaguars, tapirs and spider monkeys. This place is a dream for birders and for those wanting to reconnect with nature!
